D2R Project Launches Pilot Activities in the Kyiv Region

The D2R project team visited Irpin and Borodyanka – three communities severely affected by the war.
These cities are among the first pilot locations where the project will introduce new approaches to the dismantling, sorting, and reuse of debris generated by war-damaged infrastructure. The visits allowed the team to gain first-hand insight into local conditions and to assess how innovative debris management solutions can be implemented effectively and as close as possible to the sites of destruction.
D2R (Debris to Resource) is a joint initiative of Ukrainian and international partners addressing one of the key challenges of post-war recovery: the establishment of safe, sustainable, and resource-efficient systems for managing construction and demolition waste.

Through close collaboration, project partners are working to transform debris into a valuable resource, supporting green recovery pathways while reducing the environmental footprint of reconstruction efforts. By prioritising local processing and material reuse, D2R seeks to minimise transportation needs and maximise environmental and social benefits for affected communities.
The successful implementation of these innovative approaches to managing war-related debris will contribute to the development of scalable and replicable solutions that can be applied across Ukraine, strengthening the country’s long-term recovery and resilience.
